I think there's no best antivirus, all have adventages and disadventages over the others.

Now, to get good protection, you don't need only a good antivirus but a good antispyware too, naturally updating them constantly, and if you keep long time in line, a firewall is necesary too.

I have NOD32, Spybot Search %26 Destroy and Windows Firewall, and my problems with dangerous files or external atacks are minimal.
If you want to pay for it I would get Kapersky or Norton because those are the highest ranked antiviruses right now. If you want free I would try Comodo.
