It's quite possible to do it. I've been doing it on PC's for about 18 years, but it takes knowing your system, not trusting any emails that come from anyone that you don't know and only half of those from people that you do.
You can surf safely, pretty much, with just a firewall with frequent scans from Spybot S%26D (beware, a lot of so-called ''Anti Spyware'' programs are, in fact, spyware.) http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...
Regular checkups at http://pcpitstop.com to make sure nothing has crept in that you don't know about by checking perfomance against previous tests.
(their program ''Optimize'' is a part of my online toolkit and works really good)
Microsoft has a pretty good free scan, too, that catches things pretty good and does a better job of cleaning up your hard drive than just running disk cleanup. Try out their free Safety scan at their One Care Site. Their ultimate goal is to sell you their One Care package but it's good for publicity and it works good. I used it the other night to remove viruses that Macafee missed on a friends machine.

I've worked on many other people's computers that had viruses even though they were running everything that you could imagine.
At a friends request, I have been testing Avast, which is free for personal use. so far, I've been pretty impressed. It's not a big resource hog like most AV software and you can shut down the different services easily.
