for anti-virus PC Cillian seems to be the best out there and comes highly recomended. For spyware/adware there are several. Spybot search and destroy and ad-aware are free ones and work great. BPS Spyware remover is good too but it isn't free.

I use AVG and it's a free antivrus. Also, Adware and Microsoft are free spyware programs. The links below take you to the download locations.
It's best to scan with several virus/spyware programs. There's several online ones free that you can use. I like panda and bitdefender best because they've found the most viruses. Bitdefender is slower but supposedly high rated. Norton causes crashes on startup sometimes. AVG is a lemming that tells you where the virus is and doesnt really remove it. Adaware is best for removing spyware.
