Everyone has their favorites
The key not so much as the program ( outside of terrible norton) is to do the updates
It used to be the free version of these antivirus programs had manual updates and the paid ones downloaded automatically

I had a terrible virus that reinfected itself
I tried the whole gamut of products
The only product that removed it was AVG

A much bigger problem than viruses is spyware
Most viruses are not that mean now
Spyware is - ads and it can shut your high speed connection down to 10 % of its speed

Run a number of different spyware programs
They all find different parasites
do the updates
Remove all they find
You can only have one antivirus ( outside of yours and a free antivirus online scan such as housecall) but seveal antispyware
