The best free Anti-Virus program is AVG Free Edition from Grisoft. I am a computer consultant and have been recommending AVG to my friends, family and clients for a while now. All are very happy with it. It has a small footprint (doesn't take up much memory) and is very effective.

AVG by far I think. Ther are also AVG free anti-virus. AVG free anti-spyware and AVG free anti-rootkit. They all work amazingle well. Good Luck!
